Tales from the Edge: Big Bad BBQ Cookoff

Laredo prepares to host cooking teams from near and far in November for a $20,000 dollar competitive payout on the perfect trifecta of meats- chicken, pork ribs, and brisket at the Big Bad BBQ Cookoff presented by Budweiser. The International BBQ Cookers Association sanctioned event is set for the grounds of the Laredo Energy Arena starting Friday, November 13 and wrapping up the afternoon of Saturday, November 14, 2015.
Friday’s event schedule is from 6:00-11:00 p.m. and will feature Laredo’s own Jolly Ranchers and then headliner, David Lee Garza starting at 9:00 p.m. And you are going to want to come back on Saturday, from noon to 7:30 p.m. to taste what you smelled on the grill Friday, and to enjoy the country crooning of Gabe Garcia starting at 5:00 p.m. People’s Choice competition will begin Saturday afternoon between 3:00 and 4:00 p.m.

with sampling and voting through 6:00 p.m. The competitors are vying for a new BBQ pit valued at $1,200.00 donated by Peacemaker Pits. As a voter, you purchase tickets, visit competitor cooking stations, taste and drop your vote in the ballot box at each one that tickled your palate. Vote as often and as many times as you want. Saturday, November 14, will also feature a car show, other food booths and local craft, artisan and Mexican import vendors.

Admission to the event is a $5.00 dollar donation or one new, unwrapped toy per adult to the Laredo Police Department’s Blue Santa Program. Blue Santa will make periodic appearances throughout the food focused weekend.
Event organizers are working to recruit 100 cooking teams and that’s a lot of meat to judge.
