La India Packing Company – Culinary Scene

One of my favorite things about visiting La India, is that it is a multisensory experience; after ringing the bell and walking through the door, the aroma of hundreds of spices hits you, preparing you for a delectable meal. The Tasting Room Café transports you to your grandmother’s house and the clever way in which the blends and spices are used gives every dish, even Mexican classics like “Pollo con Mole” a distinctive flavor.

You can find from authentic Mexican food (their cookies taste just like my great grandmother’s!) to exciting unique flavors, like the Curry Chicken Salad. If it is the first time you visit La India, the best thing to order is a sampler, it has a little bit of everything.

This local jewel that began with Don Antonio Rodriguez and his wife, Antonia Villarreal Rodriguez selling “pirulis” (Mexican candy), was presented with the Texas Treasure Business Award, from the Texas Historical Commission in 2014 to recognize their 90 years in business. Their granddaughter Elsa Rodriguez is now in charge of the packing company and tasting room, and was recently interviewed and featured by Texas Highways Magazine – Meet Your Texas Maker http://www.texashighways.com/true/item/7638-meet-your-texas-maker-la-india-packing-company

You can find herbs and spices from La India Packing Company at HEB, Wal*Mart, Fiesta and Meat Markets in Laredo, but nothing beats going to their store and eating at the Tasting Room Cafe.

La India Packing Company & Tasting Room Cafe is located at 1520 Marcella St.
